Encoders or rotary encoders are used for the digital measurement of angles of rotation. As an output signal, an electrical signal proportional to the angle or the change in angle is calculated. A distinction is made here between incremental encoders and absolute encoders. These encoders are used in particular when higher positioning accuracy is required, for example in the alignment of solar panels, welding systems, and much more.

The difference between the two encoders lies in the measuring method. Incremental encoders require reference values to determine the angular position, which are used to calculate the change in angular position. Absolute encoders can measure unique values across the entire resolution range without reference points. The value output from the absolute encoder to the controller is partly serial. Common protocols for this are the BiSS interface or via SSI interface (Synchronous Serial Interface). In addition to serial transmission, absolute encoders can also transmit data via various bus systems, such as:

• Profibus interface
• CAN/CANopen bus interface (CAN in Automation)
• DeviceNet interface
• AS-Interface
• Ethernet protocols (e.g., ProfiNet, EtherCAT, Ethernet Powerlink)

In this context, the absolute encoder, in combination with our slewing drives, records all values per revolution of the worm shaft and is thus able to output the position of the slewing drive.
