Slew drives for compact rotary and tilting movements.

The application area of slewing drives in special-purpose machinery is very diverse. They enable rotary and swiveling movements around their own axis, combining bearing, gear teeth, and drive into a compact unit.

Due to the robust design, high payloads can be accommodated and large torques transmitted. This makes rotary actuators particularly suitable for devices in which components need to be rotated, swiveled, or held in a specific position.

Slewing drives can be used in both electrical and hydraulic systems. The decisive factor is the existing control environment. ATH Technik provides the matching attachments, motorizations, and components for this purpose.

Example 01

Apparatus for Rotating and Transporting a Roll

This device is used for rotating and moving a roller. The assembly can be moved in the Z-direction via a spindle. The rotary actuator additionally generates a rotational movement around the Y-axis.

Due to the large lever arm to the center of gravity of the roller, a high output torque is required at the slewing drive. At the same time, the assembly must be stably supported and securely held.

In this application, a component is attached to a fixture and swiveled or rotated into various positions depending on the requirement.

The special requirement lies in the changing moment loads depending on the respective end position. The slewing drive must provide a high output torque to initiate movement and at the same time apply a high holding torque against a possible reverse rotation. Position sensing is performed by an additional absolute encoder.

Save installation space compared to pinion slewing ring solutions

In many special-purpose machines, a slewing drive system can be a more compact alternative to a solution consisting of a slewing ring, pinion, and separate drive. Especially in cases of limited installation space, high torques, or integrated motion tasks, this can result in a structurally simple and robust solution.
